The goals of the department are to provide the basic skills, intellectual discipline and general knowledge which are part of a liberal arts education and also provide useful approaches to solving societal problems. The mathematics and computer science curricula prepare students for graduate study, for responsible positions in business, industry, and government, and for teaching positions in secondary and elementary schools. Basic skills and techniques provide for entering a career as an accountant, actuary, banker, bio-mathematician, computer programmer, computer scientist, economist, engineer, industrial researcher, lawyer, management consultant, market research analyst, mathematician, mathematics teacher, operations researcher, quality control specialist, statistician, or systems analyst.

In 1997 Sister Jo Ann Fellin,
Professor Emeritus,completed
a 105 page history of the mathematics department at Mount St. Scholastica
College
(sponsored by Mount St. Scholastica)
from 1923 to 1971. The story begins with Sister Dorothy Dooley as one of the
three faculty members teaching when the
College
opened
in 1923
with
six
students
enrolled. The history includes several picture pages of the faculty who taught
in the department as well as activities of the Department over that time period
and a list of the graduates with a major in mathematics.
In the summer of 2000,
Sister Jo Ann Fellin completed a brief account of the Department of Mathematics
at St. Benedict's College (sponsored by St.
Benedict's Abbey). It contains a listing of
the faculty from 1917 to 1971 and six picture pages of the faculty and academic
activity. The grads from 1934 to 1971 with a major in mathematics are listed
in chronological order.
